Medical Requirements

Prior to a student flying solo, s/he must have had a medical examination and be the holder of a class 1 or 2 pilots medical certificate. It is important that everyone contemplating a career in aviation should be medically examined to the professional standard (class 1), before time and money is invested in flying lessons. It is advisable that a medical is attained as early as possible in your flight training if, for unforeseen circumstances, you do not acquire the medical then you would not have invested too much money in your flight training.

Pilots medicals are valid for a given time depending on your age.

Class 1 medical certificate:

  • Under the age of 40, 1 year
  • Over the age of 40, 6 months

Class 2 medical certificate:

  • Under the age of 40, 5 years
  • Over the age of 40, 2 years
  • Over the age of 50, 1 year

Only the Designated Medical Examiners (DMEs) are allowed to issue an aviation medical. A list of such doctors is available from the Aero Club, the local ones are listed below.
